About the Forest Park, Illinois Area

Forest Park, known as "The village with a smile", is located about 10 miles west of Chicago and borders both River Forest and Oak Park. The three villages have their distinct characters, and their residents enjoy what each village has to offer. When you enter Forest Park from the Eisenhower Expressway, you’ll probably first see the Ferrarra Pan Candy Company, home of the famous Lemonheads. Ferrara Pan is a perfect example of the character of businesses and industries that have made Forest Park their home for decades. Mom-and-Pop stores choose to set up shop in Forest Park because of ease with which the village allows businesses to flourish.  The result is a wonderful mixture of specialty shops, quaint antique shops, delicious ice cream, unique restaurants, and services. The downtown of Madison Street continually modernizes, yet maintains the varied architecture and historic integrity that is so characteristic of this area.

Residents have plenty of activities to choose from for their recreation and community life. The Village of Forest Park boasts an excellent park district, which sits on a 15 acre park and features a beautiful, new aquatic center which opened in 1996. It has two flume slides, two drop slides, a diving board, an interactive play structure, lap lanes and a zero-depth shallow end. The pool is surrounded by landscaped sun decks, a concession stand, a sand play area and a sand volleyball court. The park district also offers a variety of programs for all ages. Residents can also enjoy the new, modern public library which holds about 90,000 items on its shelves. Programs include arts and crafts, story hours, family movies, guest speakers and holiday parties. During the summer, the popular French Market draws Forest Parkers to meet up with friends and neighbors as they share in local cuisine, fresh fruits and vegetables, and live music.

Forest Park is home to excellent public and private schools. District 91 offers students innovative teaching methods, well-trained teachers, small class sizes and high academic achievement. Parents can also choose private schools for their children at St. Bernadine and St. John Lutheran Schools, and the Forest Park Montessori Child Development Center. Forest Park students go to nearby Proviso East High School. Forest Park’s quaint neighborhoods are characterized by craftsman, unique homes, winding streets, and mature trees.
